Lawyer Questions
What gives a lawyer the authority to obtain private records? Let's say I want to sue somebody for libel but all I have is their Gmail address. Naturally, I need a lawyer to obtain their name and IP address from Google. So what does the lawyer do to obtain those records? Does he show up at Google and say "I'm a lawyer and I need this?" – what gives a lawyer that authority?
What are the downsides of being a lawyer? Hello, everyone. I need some insights and wisdoms from people who are lawyers or know a lot about the inside and out of being a lawyer. Growing up in my community, I had so many people telling me how glamorous life of a lawyer is, how much money they make, how nice are their houses and cars, how respected they are in their community. It almost sounded like being a lawyer is one of the most fantastic careers in the world with hardly any problems. But as life is, I am sure there are downsides of being a lawyer that many ordinary people don't know about. 1. What are the downsides of being a lawyer? 2. At the end, do you believe the good sides far outweigh the bad sides? 3. Would you recommend the career to someone who values deeply on family time and enjoying life? Thanks in advance for any insights.
What kind of lawyer should I go to if I need assistance with both divorce AND financial matters immediately? In other words, I am going through a divorce for financial reasons. I am not going to declare bankruptcy, but need legal assistance to deal with creditors. I have a small but steady source of income; enough to pay for a lawyer on a payment plan and enough to pay back what I will owe to bills and creditors, but the creditors WILL NOT work with me and I want to do it all through a lawyer. I make too much to qualify for Legal Aid or any other assistance of that sort.
What can a lawyer do for me if i just got a speeding ticket while on deferred disposition? I live in Texas and got a ticket 2 months ago and was granted deferred disposition meaning that if i do not get another ticket with in 90 days it will be dismissed... however i just received another... i have heard of people paying a lawyer to possibly "work deals" with the judges to get something dismissed or reduced... anyone know what a lawyer could possibly do for me? What type of lawyer spends the most amount of time at an office, not a courtroom? On every TV show/movie that involved Lawyers, you see them in the courtroom arguing a case. Personally, I want to be a lawyer that spends more time at the office than public speaking/aruging at the courts. What type of lawyer spends the most time at the office instead of the courts?? Corporate Lawyers?? Intellectual Property Lawyers?? Some people want to argue their case in front of a jury or a judge, I do not. I would like to give people legal counsel but not have to really defend anyone by arguing their case.
What do you think of a lawyer who tells an opposing pro se party that it is okay to ignore a deadline? If the lawyer says that a time deadline imposed by a judge in an order is "flexible." what would you think? Would you think that the lawyer and perhaps the court would be bending the written Rules of Court on other matters, so that the pro se person would have no way of knowing what the real operational rules were? How often do lawyers stray from adhering to proceedural rules, and are they usually allowed to do so if the are proceeding against a pro se party?

What would lawyer costs for an auto insurance company be? I'm trying to work out a settlement with the auto-insurance company over an injury that happened last December. They're offering $3,500, but we want $5,000. I was wondering how much it would cost them in legal fees, and lawyer costs if we were to bring this to court. It could help in our bartering if we know they'll be saving money just settling. Thanks.

How can a lawyer in Pennsylvania get their real estate license? What would be the ethical things for a defense lawyer to do in the following situation? A defense lawyer is defending someone accused of a violent crime such as rape, murder, or assault, and the lawyer knows the client is guilty because the client confessed to him or he has access to evidence that clearly shows the client is guitly. Is it unethical for the lawyer to try to get the client declared "not guilty" so he can walk free unpunished, or is the attorney's ONLY obligation to his client? Or does the attorney have a moral and ethical obligation to society to insure the guilty party is punished? What is the bigger purpose: defending the client or defending society?
How will getting a lawyer to help work with collection agency affect my credit? In June, I got involved with a debt settlement company that has caused me nothing but trouble. I got my money back from them, but my two bank of america accounts were sent to arbitration. I am having trouble getting a loan to pay off the accounts because of the 30 days past due notice on my credit report for those accounts. Even with a co-signer with perfect credit, we have ran into various problems, such as living in different cities. My parents said to contact a lawyer and they would be able to set up payments for me, but I am wondering what that will do to my credit. Thanks! The collection people said I still have a pretty good credit score, but I just want these past due balance notations to go away so my score will go back up. I have never made a late payment before. I don't want to file bankruptcy either as I would like to buy a house in a couple years. The payments they offered me are $1800 per month for six months. I can't afford that.
What is the best way to hire a business lawyer? I'm on a shoe string budget and need to find a lawyer to write up some contracts. I want to approach a young lawyer fresh out of school because I think those types of newcomers may charge a cheaper rate to get their foot in the door.. Is that a good approach? What I am needing is to have solid sponsorship contracts and venue rental agreements. Is there a better way to get these agreements other than paying a lawyer to go over them? Your information is appreciated.
What is the role of a lawyer in a Mergers and Acquisitions transaction? I would like to study law and this is a topic which I will have to present at school. How to chose a good business lawyer? I'm looking to start a business, but am not sure what to look for in a good business lawyer. I'm going to need help drafting letters in the hopes of gaining corporate assistance in starting the business. But I've never needed a lawyer before and want to make sure I get a good one that hopefully won't eat up the small budget that I have. Any lawyers out there with any advice on the subject? I just want to make sure that my business idea stays mine and don't want some shady lawyer that's going to run off with my plan the minute they hear about it. Thank you!
How can a Peruvian Lawyer become a Lawyer in California? My wife is a lawyer in Peru. She is interested in becoming a lawyer in California. What is the quickest and easiest route for her to take to become elligible to take and pass the California Bar Exam? Thanks for the two answers so far. I know that of course much studying will be involved, but the main thrust of my question is, what must she do to become ELIGIBLE to take the Bar Exam? I understand that if you are a lawyer from an English Common Law Country (e.g. England) then you can just take the bar exam (presumably after having studied for it, but that is up to you). As a Peruvian lawyer, though, what must she do to become eligible to take the bar exam?
Can a lawyer in Ontario help a friend sue someone on his own time? My friend is being threatened with court from her ex's lawyer, who happens to be his old friend from school. The lawyer is using his personal email for their exchanges, even though he works for a law firm. It's obvious he's doing this work for free on behalf of his "friend". Shouldn't he be using his work email address for his threats? Or do you think he's afraid of his bosses finding out what he's doing? Should she email the lawyer to his work email as well as his personal email when she responds?
What are good characteristics that make up a good criminal lawyer? I have had my mind set on becoming a lawyer since I was little but I am beginning to second guess it. What are the documents a lawyer needs to give you once your house purchase is completed? I bought a house in September in London and the lawyer just sent me the documents related to the completion of the purchase. there is a document from the land registry and a few documents related to some company giving a guarantee that the house is free from wood rot. Can you tell me if there are any other documents related to the ownership of the house that the lawyer should give me. I'm particularly concerned that there is no plan for the land I own - no description of how much land space is owned with the house etc. I'm even more worried because the lawyer is totally disorganised and I wonder what else she has missed. Yes I did take out a mortgage - from whom do I request a copy of the title deeds please?
How do you stop calls from a lawyer who is looking for your neighbor? Apparently my neighbor owes this lawyer something--I don't know what's going on--and he is continually calling my apartment even though he knows she does not live here. I think she is avoiding him and he is trying to get to her though us. He calls every single day! Most of the time I avoid him though privacy director, but how can I get him to stop?
